Damage: creases, gaps and tears in the paper along the folds, stains, tape.

Work envisaged: cleaning of surface dirt with brushes and vulcanised rubber, removal of stains through application of agar agar and removal of dry adhesive tape. Closure of lacerations and gaps with veil and KAMI Japanese papers of suitable colour and weight, Zin-Shofu (wheat starch) adhesive, watercolour integration of the lacunae.

In addition, construction of a custom-made storage container.

Printed volume, paperback binding with printed decorations missing spine and front plate. Damage to the papers: tears at the folds, ragged and brittle edges due to a previous microbiological attack, tears and gaps, foxing and stains due to humidity, felting due to depolymerisation. Damage to the cover: loose stitching, broken in places. Indentation lost, only the back plate with abrasions and gaps remains of the cover.

Work planned: dismantling of the papers with cutting of the stitching thread, washing and disinfection treatment by immersion in water and denatured and decoloured ethyl alcohol, mending of the papers with uncoated Japanese paper of a suitable colour and weight, Tylose MH 300p adhesive, continuous stitching without backing, reinforcement of the binding with non-acidic Japanese paper and Tylose MH 300p, new ivory-coloured cardboard cover with neutral pH-value and recovery of the original back plate.

Edgar manuscript score restoration on paper marked Ricordi (on many the mark is not visible because they have been cut out). Definitely a copy produced by Casa Ricordi, used for a performance, as can be seen from the unmistakable marks; many indications, corrections and elaborations by Puccini’s hand can be seen.

Ink manuscript, pages rubbed out. Damage. Creases, tears and lacunae, old restorations unsuitable for conservation, very torn and stained edges.

Work envisaged: dry cleaning, removal of old restorations with Tylose MH 300p compresses, deacidification treatment by nebulisation with Bookeeper, mending of all the papers with veil and Japanese paper of suitable colour and weight and Tylose MH 300p adhesive, flattening of the papers under weight, arrangement in a conservation folder in acid free alkaline reserve cardboard to measure.

Damage to the cover: loss of the spine, old ‘restoration’ with overlapping red cloth, adhesive tape on the plates, gaps, abrasions, loss of anchorage, precarious stitching, indorsatura stopped with metal staples.

Work planned: dismantling of the papers by removing the crimping and metal tips, mending of the papers with tissue and unembossed Japanese paper and Tylose MH 300p adhesive, new stitching on cotton webbing, indorsing in poached cotton cloth, cleaning and restoration of the original cover, removal of the adhesive tape with a suitable solvent, remake of the spine in cloth in a neutral colour or as close as possible to the original dials. Damage to the papers: red adhesive tape to the folds of the first pages, tape stains to the folds of all the papers, tears, rust from metal staples.
