In the world

It is a well-known fact that Giacomo Puccini today is known throughout the world and that his works live in theatres all over the world.

Less known is the fact that the works of Puccini began their international travels immediately after the first premieres, thanks to far-sighted and effective promotional activities implemented by Casa Ricordi. There are, for example, the first Italian premieres of Manon Lescaut: Trento (then in Austria), 1893; Hamburg, 1893; Budapest, 1895; London, 1895; Buenos Aires, 1905; Montevideo, 1905; Nice, 1906; New York, 1907 and Paris, 1910. In all these cases the author was present, also attending rehearsals to ensure quality performances. But many were the representations which Puccini did not attend.

A flash from a Lucca periodical of 1910: In Australia there has been a tour in which Butterfly was staged 110 times and Bohème a hundred times. In just six months, Bohème has been staged in 111 theatres; Butterfly in 105 theatres; Tosca in 98 theatres and Manon Lescaut in 14 theatres between the two Americas, in the nations of Europe, Africa and Asia.

We highlight here just premieres and performances in which Puccini was present.
